Mountain Biking
The Gunflint Trail in Northern Minnesota is a mountain bikers' paradise. Secluded, unspoiled, not yet discovered, with wooded trails (as challenging as you can stand), abandoned railroads and logging roads (a little more leisurely), and off-the-beaten path biking (are you crazy) - it's as good as it gets. The glaciers left behind the Laurnetian Highlands, and that means hilly, rugged terrain, rocks, cliffs, and great scenery.
In the spring, summer and fall, the Gunflint Trail Ski Trail System alone offers about 200km of some of the most challenging, spectacular, scenic, rugged riding you can find in this part of the country. Old logging roads offer more level riding on unpaved surface, and, as you might expect, riding gets kind of wild in the woods.
One note of caution (well, maybe two or three): first of all, you need to make sure that you NEVER ride your bike into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness - this area is strictly off-limits to any kind of traffic other than by foot or canoe. Make sure you know where you are. Which brings up the next point: make sure someone else knows where you are. It's rugged out here, so plan for do-it-yourself fixes of your bike, bring plenty of water, a map, compass, and always be sure to tell someone about your plans and when you should be returning. Third note: this is an at-your-own-risk activity; helmets are definitely recommended.
