The Gunflint Trail Scenic Byway (Cook County Road 12) begins in Grand Marais, Minnesota and ends at Saganaga Lake, on the Minnesota/Canadian border.
The Gunflint Trail was designated as a Minnesota Scenic Byway in 1999 and a NATIONAL Scenic Byway in 2009. This Scenic Byway winds its way through northeastern Minnesota's boreal forest, traverses fifty-seven miles through a diverse combination of extreme rural wilderness and a limited human habituated landscape. The diversity of this natural and historical by-way is unique to both Minnesota and the upper Midwest.
The Gunflint Trail is the eastern access area to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
