Gunflint Trail - Fishing

Notice those lakes on either side of the Scenic Byway? They offer some of the best fishing in Minnesota. Resorts and outfitters offer anything and everything you need for fishing - from boats and motors to licenses, gear and bait. Species include trout (lake and rainbow), walleye, smallmouth bass and northern pike. Experienced guides, for hire by the day or half day, help you find the fish, and share tips for successful angling.

From the season opener in mid-May on, fishing is legendary, thanks in great measure to the conservation efforts of the locals. Many of the trout and non-native bass and walleye in these waters are the descendants of fingerlings hand-planted in the lakes and streams by dedicated residents. Catch and release is encouraged, offering anglers the chance to repeat the thrill of the catch on yet another day (and pass it along to a future generation). As the waters warm, the fish will gather at lower depths, but early in the season, they can be taken on light tackle in shallow waters. And if you like the open-water fishing, be sure to come back for ice fishing. (Trout seem to be especially hungry in the winter!)
