Gunflint Trail - Lakes
As you drive north along the North Shore Scenic Byway, you have majestic Lake Superior by your side the entire way from Duluth. As you turn onto the Gunflint Trail Scenic Byway from the town of Grand Marais, you enter a corridor surrounded by lakes on both sides, and the world-famous Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW).
Ancient glaciers carved out bedrock and created the myriad of lakes connected by streams, waterfalls, and portages. The BWCAW is an area unlike any other in the world. It covers approximately 1.3 million acres, and extends nearly 150 miles along the boundary between the United States and Canada. There are more than 1000 lakes and over1500 miles of canoe routes throughout the BWCAW.
The lakes, rivers and streams you see directly adjacent to the Gunflint Trail offer the same cool, clear water found in the neighboring BWCAW lakes. Abundant with numerous fish species, the waterways along the Gunflint Trail offer excellent fishing in addition to canoe routes, boating and opportunities for swimming. In the winter, the frozen lakes offer the perfect surface for XC skiing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing.
