| Drive the Gunflint Trail The Gunflint Trail is a designated Minnesota Scenic Byway. This paved road, also known as Cook County Road 12, begins on on the North Shore of Lake Superior, in Grand Marais, Minnesota, and winds its way through dense forests and along the lakes and streams, ending at Saganaga Lake.
Travel the Gunflint Trail and you immediately notice the prominence of forests. The Trail begins in a mixed hardwood/conifer forest, changes to a maple hardwood forest for a brief time, then to a mixed conifer/hardwood forest, and finally, a boreal pine forest.
This landscape of forest and the numerous lakes and rivers reflect changes in the natural world and the impact of humans. The forests are home to a diverse group of mammals and birds.
Hiking Trails are scattered throughout the area, and in winter hundreds of kilometers groomed, tracked cross-country ski trails are available. Maps.
