Wild Mushrooming
Along the Gunflint Trail Scenic Byway you can search for - and find - wild mushrooms of many varieties. Gourmet cooks (and diners) will go out of their minds with delight when they discover a patch of scrumptious morels. Never mind asking, no one is going to lead you to their own patch. You'll have to make this discovery on your own. But what a reward!
Before you begin, pick up this invaluable book, Start Mushrooming, by Stan Tekiela and Karen Shanberg (Adventure Publications, Inc., 1-800-678-7006). It will "help you find and clearly identify six of the most unmistakable, edible mushrooms in North America." Best of all, it has a checklist for each of the six mushrooms to ensure easy and positive identification. Read the book well ahead of your trip, and get familiar with the background information that will help you make use of the guide and the checklists. Then take the book with you as you hunt and harvest. You can compare the mushrooms you find with the photos, illustrations and text. Then, when you're 100% positive you have identified your edible bounty correctly, harvest and enjoy!
Remember, if you cannot ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY identify a mushroom, don't take a chance by eating it. But if you absolutely, positively can identify it, you're in for a rare and delicious north woods treat.
The North House Folk School in Grand Marais offers spring and fall mushrooming classes. Check out their web site for details. add link
