Gunflint Trail Tree Species
A diverse variety of tree species are found on the Gunflint. As the road leaves Grand Marais, the forest is an older mixed hardwood and conifer forest. White Paper Birch, Aspen, White Spruce are common. Just before the road crests the top of the hill Sugar Maple are present (this is one Scenic Byway you won't want to miss in the fall!).
Approximately 8 miles from Grand Marais, the forest becomes mixed deciduous and conifer with several birch plantations visible. Black Spruce and Balsam Fir are added into the mix.
The Gunflint Trail gateway old-growth White Pine (about 10 miles from Grand Marais) are well known and cherished reminders of past centuries.
About 15 miles from Grand Marias, the forest changes to mixed conifer and aspen, and the last several miles are Boreal forest. The dominant tree along the roadway at the end of the Gunflint Trail is Jack Pine. While the taller trees are more prominent, species such as Pin Cherry, Mountain Ash, Spotted Alder, Elderberry, and Hazel are also present.
This diverse forest is home to diverse species of birds and other wildlife.
